What is Regular Approved Training?
Regular Approved Training is a status available to Unemployment Insurance (UI) claimants who are attending a training program. This status allows a person’s job contacts to be waived while they are attending training without disqualifying them from receiving benefits.
What types of training can this cover?
Regular Approved Training applies to people in a variety of training programs:
- Traditional school setting to earn a degree or certificate
- Online programs to earn a degree or certificate
- GED preparatory courses
- Private training programs offered through employers to earn industry credentials
- Entrepreneurial training programs
- English Language programs.
Are there certain types of training that cannot be approved?
Regular Approved Training cannot be approved for self-study times to prepare to take a certification exam.
What criteria have to be met to be approved?
- The claimant’s prospect of obtaining suitable employment in the labor-market area is limited or substantially diminished because of his/her current skills.
- The claimant has the qualifications and aptitude to complete the training and it is reasonable to expect that the claimant will complete the training.
- There are reasonable employment opportunities available to the claimant upon completion of training: Labor Market Information resources show average or higher growth in the field.
- The training program is designed to result in the claimant’s prompt reemployment in suitable work.
What do I need to do to apply?
- To submit an application you must be an active UI claimant (receiving severance in lieu of payments is acceptable); if your claim has been closed for any reason, you must first resolve any issues and have your claim reactivated before an application can be submitted.
- Complete an application. You may pick up a Regular Approved Training application form at the front desk or in the career center at the Workforce Center.
You will need the following information to submit with your application:
- Exact start date: the date you started training toward this goal
- Projected end date: when you will attain your GED, certificate, degree, etc.
- Grades from any previous semesters you have completed toward this goal
- Current course schedule
What will happen with my application?
A Career Consultant will contact you via e-mail regarding the status of your application. You may be required to schedule an appointment if further documentation is required. You are not guaranteed to be approved for this program and must continue to look for work until you are notified that your application has been approved.
